Engage SDK integration in a video streaming app: how TVer Android delivers content to the Play Store
Takuro NegishiAndroid Engineer
By using Google's Engage SDK, you can display your app's content in Play Store widgets, Entertainment Space on tablets, and within the Play Store app. Users can directly reach content from the Play Store or widgets "before opening the app," making it a growing area of interest as a way to boost engagement and create new touchpoints. On the other hand, public case studies on its adoption in Japan—especially in video streaming—are limited, and there is still a lack of reference information on cluster design, testing with dedicated apps, and the application process. In this session, based on my experience integrating the Engage SDK into the TVer Android app through to release, I will share the things I "noticed," "got stuck on," and "struggled with" during design, implementation, application, and operation. Rather than covering everything exhaustively, I plan to speak as concretely as possible, focusing on the points I would have wanted to hear if I were in the same position. Topics planned to cover (some deep dives or selections may change): - Overview of Engage SDK - What is Engage SDK and the benefits of adoption - Where content appears - Types of clusters and the basic structure of content types (Entities) - Building the architecture - Overview of processing structure learned from sample apps - Integration with WorkManager, designing update timing and frequency - Error handling and fail-safes - Stumbling blocks in verification and application - Behavior verification with dedicated apps - Application steps and handling rejections - Post-release operation and results - Staged releases and rollouts - Results achieved - Future outlook - Improving personalization accuracy - Application to Engage SDK for Android TV / Google TV This session aims to provide valuable learnings for those who "want to try Engage SDK," "have adopted it but are lost in the operational phase," or "want to build Play Store pathways for video streaming apps." Beyond video streaming, I hope it serves as a helpful reference for architectural decisions for any Android developer with recommendable content in their apps.
