The 'expressway' for training Androiders and where we stand after real-world practice

Soft skills 日本語

"We don't have enough Android application engineers"—To address this pressing issue, we chose to "create a path for in-house web application engineers to challenge themselves in the mobile domain." This initiative, which began in 2025 as the first phase of the "Hatena Reskilling Program," started with intensive learning targeting two web application engineers. We aimed to extract the insights gained as core essences, refine them into a reproducible onboarding process that can be expanded in the future, and above all, enable them to continue thriving as "independent engineers" in the field. In this session, we follow the year-long journey of engineers who transitioned into Androiders through the 3-month program. From the perspectives of both mentors and learners, we will discuss their subsequent trajectory and current stage of growth. Additionally, in the 2026 development environment where AI coding assistance has become commonplace, we share the real sense that the "gritty, systematic fundamentals" built at the start of the program now serve as an unshakeable foundation for properly evaluating AI outputs and mastering tools. What will be covered: The choice to nurture talent found amid hiring difficulties * Common struggle of mobile application engineer shortages and the solution of internal career transitions * Positioning as the first phase of the "Hatena Reskilling Program" * Organizational backup supporting the challenge Record of "intensive learning" starting with two people * Designing a learning curriculum focused on modern stacks (Kotlin/Compose) * Output-driven training to build an app from scratch in two weeks * Joining actual projects: Renewal development of the Hatena Blog app Turning success experiences into shared company assets * Extracting essence: Streamlining a heavy program into an easy-to-use "onboarding package" * Application and rollout to other members What happened to the graduates afterward * Struggles with XML, legacy architecture, and Android OS-specific behavior not covered in training * Success in their respective teams while leveraging server-side knowledge Redefining the value of fundamentals in the AI era * How systematic acquisition in 2025 supports development in 2026 with widespread AI assistance * Importance of continuous team follow-ups (Translated by the DroidKaigi Committee)
